Introduction

The adaptation and loss and damage (L&D) work program of SLYCAN Trust addresses climate-induced L&D by implementing evidence-based policies and actions within the framework of the UNFCCC process. It places a special emphasis on enhancing climate resilience, climate-related human mobility, and addressing non-economic or cultural forms of L&D. The project focuses on generating evidence-based materials, such as country-specific case studies and narratives, to communicate the impacts of climate change effectively. These materials aim to support science-based policy processes and raise awareness of climate impacts in the countries most vulnerable to climate change. The development of the case studies fall under the collaborative framework established between SLYCAN Trust and the government entities the respective countries including the National Building Organization of Sri Lanka (NBRO), the Environmental Protection Agency Ghana , the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology of the Republic of Maldives facilitating cooperation in areas of shared interest. This event will showcase the project's activities and present the main discoveries, along with an overview of the case studies carried out in Sri Lanka, Ghana, and Maldives.

Objectives

  • To identify the climate risks and risk-prone areas based on indicators related to climate induced loss and damage in Sri Lanka, Ghana and Maldives.
  • To identify the communities in resettlement, high-risk, and medium-risk areas and their existing capacities and solutions to address climate-related risks and L&D practices.
  • To map the adaptation gaps, forms of L&D, and human mobility in the identified sites.
  • Analyzing existing laws, policies, and regulations related to impacts as well as responses.
  • To identify potential measures for reducing vulnerability or strengthening adaptive forms of mobility in response to L&D connected to climate change.
  • To identify the climate induced loss and damages associated with the cultural heritage of the identified sites in the countries.
