The global food system, a complex web connecting nature, people, and economies, stands at a critical juncture. Climate change, manifesting through increasingly erratic weather conditions including unreliable rainfall patterns, extended droughts, unprecedented heatwaves, and other extreme weather events, directly threatens agricultural productivity, disrupts food security, and exacerbates hunger and malnutrition worldwide. Concurrently, agriculture and food systems are also a major source of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for approximately 22% of anthropogenic emissions. Addressing these intertwined crises calls for a fundamental shift towards a just, climate-friendly food system.

This discussion paper draws on insights from the recent Climate 2.0 dialogue hosted by ClimaComms, held in parallel with the June Climate Meetings (SB62), as well as complementary research, to explore pathways for this vital transformation. It integrates diverse perspectives and local realities expressed by participants from around the world, emphasising the need for holistic solutions. These solutions must combine scientific innovation with traditional knowledge, bridge policy and practice, and drive both behavioural and systemic change to secure global food security in an ever-warming world.
