Natural resources play a pivotal role within the security-climate nexus as they are under increasing pressure from climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, conflict, and unsustainable human use. The resulting degradation of natural resources directly impacts security from local to global levels by jeopardizing essential services like food, water, and energy, besides causing adverse effects in health, human mobility, and other areas. The impacts are context-specific but strongly influence regional and global stability across a wide array of sectors. The multifaceted challenge of natural resource governance in the security-climate nexus must be met with integrated solutions that bridge sectoral silos and planning processes and connect domestic, regional and global policy. With sound governance, societies can avoid vicious cycles where heightened insecurity erodes their capacity to cope.
This publication as part of SLYCAN Trust’s work programme on security, climate change, and environment seeks to contribute to a holistic and evidence-based understanding of the role of human mobility in this nexus, identify priority gaps to be addressed, and explore solutions that unlock synergies in the context of multilateral and regional policy processes.
